Amidst the escalating threat of flood disasters triggered by extreme rainfall due to global climate change, traditional flood control materials—such as wooden piles, steel sheet piles, and concrete—struggle to meet modern demands due to issues like poor durability, cumbersome construction, and inadequate ecological compatibility. Against this backdrop, plastic steel sheet piles have emerged as a primary solution for flood prevention and control, offering highly efficient alternatives through their unique advantages.
Compared to traditional materials, plastic steel sheet piles offer significant advantages: First, exceptional durability with resistance to acids, alkalis, and corrosion, ensuring a service life exceeding 50 years. Second, superior mechanical properties including high strength and excellent toughness, enabling effective resistance against flood impacts. Third, efficient construction due to lightweight design and minimal heavy equipment requirements, boosting efficiency by over fivefold and making them ideal for emergency response. Fourth, ecological sustainability, as they support aquatic plant growth, unifying flood protection with ecological restoration.
In embankment construction and reinforcement, their interlocking structure forms impermeable barriers, enhancing resistance to seepage and erosion. For instance, the Zhejiang Coastal Flood Control Project elevated its tidal resistance standard from a 50-year to a 300-year event. The plastic steel sheet pile pilot section in Ningxia’s Yellow River flood control project effectively curbed water scouring, ensuring embankment stability.
For seepage control and piping mitigation in embankments, plastic-steel sheet piles function as impermeable walls to block infiltration pathways, rapidly resolving critical situations. Trials conducted by the Ministry of Water Resources’ Embankment Center in Zibo, Shandong, provided replicable experience for nationwide emergency embankment repairs. A specific model of plastic-steel sheet piles used in a Jiangsu coastal embankment project prevented seepage damage during construction.
During emergency response, plastic steel sheet piles demonstrate their “transport and install immediately” advantage, enabling rapid construction of flood barriers in areas inaccessible to large equipment. During Southeast Asian floods, plastic steel sheet piles exported from China successfully protected coastal residents.
